(Woodland Hills, California) – Please join us Thursday September 13th 6-8pm at the Pierce College Art Gallery for the reception of Erika Lizée’s Solo Exhibition. Lizée is a painter who creates illusion-based installations. Mysterious, biomorphic forms appear to exist within the walls of the gallery, while tendril-like elements expand and emerge into the physical space of the viewer. She imagines gallery walls as symbolic thresholds between different realms of existence, between life and death. The illusionistic quality of these installations also speaks to how perceptions and beliefs create reality.

The use of illusion in her work is important, as it gives rise to simultaneous feelings of wonder and uncertainty in viewers. For Lizée, it serves as a metaphor for how we can feel such awe for the beauty, complexity and interconnectedness of the world we live in, while also harboring intense feelings of doubt and anxiety surrounding the big questions of where we come from, what the purpose of our lives is and what happens when we eventually die.

Lizée has always been drawn to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, which is a tale that considers how our perceptions of the world around us create what we believe to be real. When our perceptions change through experience, so do our concepts of what is real. In her installations, the use of illusionistic and sculptural paintings work in conjunction with actual light and shadow to create a transformative experience for viewers, as their perceptions shift with a greater understanding of the relationship between artistic materials and exhibition space.

The installations serve as a parallel for the journey of our personal and shared life experiences. Individually, each piece has its own inspirations, pulling from sacred geometry, nature and symbols of the feminine. Overall, these works speak to the deep-rooted questions we have always faced in relation to the existence of the universe and our role in it.

Erika Lizée was born in Chicago, Illinois, yet was raised in a tiny town in Northern Wisconsin. Much of her childhood was spent exploring the woods, swimming the lakes and climbing the snowdrifts of this serene part of the country. Her upbringing fostered a strong connection to the natural world, which remains an important aspect of Lizée’s life and artwork.

Ms. Lizée is an artist that creates site-specific, illusion-based installations with acrylic paint. Most recently, she has built installations within the Vita Art Center, Gallery 825, Launch LA, ArtShare LA, and the International Terminal at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Her work has been featured in Juxtapoz, Beautiful/Decay, HiFructose, The Huffington Post and Beautiful Bizarre magazines.

Erika Lizée earned a BFA in Painting from UNC Asheville, and her MFA in Painting from CSU Northridge. She is a Professor of Art at Moorpark College, as well as the Director of the Moorpark College Art Gallery. She lives and works in the greater Los Angeles area.

Members of the San Diego Feminist Image Group, Shoebox Projects and the Swedish Group Krogen Amerika present artworks that explore multiple visions of what feminism is today, in the context of Southern California and Northern Europe. Artists address the complexity of gender equality through themes such as sexism, body image, class, race, politics, spirituality, domesticity, biology, and history.

This exhibition will travel to Stockholm, Sweden in May 2018.

The public is invited to attend the opening reception on Sunday, February 25, from 3-6pm at Shoebox Projects in the Brewery Arts Complex, Los Angeles. Artists will be present to engage the public.

The Feminist Image Group was formed in 2009. FIG is a coalition of San Diego visual artists who meet to discuss art, see exhibitions, and support one another in our careers. We work across many media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation, digital media and performance. The group has had exhibitions at San Diego Mesa College, Art Produce Gallery, Hyde Gallery at Grossmont College, Art San Diego Artfair, and has an upcoming exhibition at the Women’s Museum of California.
“Krogen Amerika” is the name of a Swedish printmaking group in the region of Östergötland in Sweden. The group works out of a a red wooden house from 1704 in the very center of the Swedish city of Linköping. During the years, it has functioned as a private home, a local pub, and a meeting place for emigrants to America (hence the name of the house, “Krogen Amerika”). Now it is a fully functional printmaking studio and art gallery. This artist-run gallery and studio space is partly funded by the city of Linköping. About 20 artists work here, and also together manage the space, with the support from the local community. The gallery exhibits artists from all over Sweden. Krogen America has exhibited as a group at Norrköpings Museum, Östergötlands Museum, Grafiska Sällskapet, the Palo Alto City Hall, Odense Konsthall Danmark, Berlin Kunstfactor.

Neither representative nor completely abstract, artist Erika Lizée constructs site-specific installations with painted biomorphic forms that evoke a sense of wonder and a greater connection to the universe. Aimed at altering perceptions and expanding the collective consciousness, Lizée creates visually mystifying paradigms as she finds new ways to entice and express the powerful relationships between all living beings and the universe they inhabit.

Finding inspiration in the eternal search for understanding life as we know it, as well as the artistic space of the gallery itself, Lizée utilizes the white cube walls as symbolic thresholds between life and death and what is known and unknown in this world. Beyond the wall’s superficiality, more complex biomorphic forms combine within the natural boundaries of sacred geometry and the golden ratio, while other forms expand and emerge into the physical realm of the viewer.

Using the techniques of trompe l’oeil and sculptural painting, Lizée works in conjunction with actual light and perception—as if physical materials—to spark a sense of wonder in the viewer. Lizée’s artistic whimsy and soulful provocation create a transformative experience as viewers’ perceptions shift into greater understanding of the relationship between artistic materials and exhibition space. Creating a purposeful epiphany guides viewers into an enlightened state of being as they explore all of the complex details in the installations and discover new truths around every corner.

Finding fuel in scientific theory, mathematical truths and sequences, and the core similarities in all-natural creations, Lizée creates work that reflects her personal thirst for knowledge and understanding, while inspiring and engaging viewers into asking more questions and sparking more curiosities. Her work is not observational but participatory and stimulating.

Like a mysterious, alluring phantasm or the inner workings of a biomechanical beast, Lizee’s illusory paintings will transform the exhibition space at Gallery 825, leaping off the walls and infiltrating the minds and imaginations of visitors during her solo exhibition. The Dura-Lar paintings will push and pull with viewers’ perception of art and art space, of real and unreal, and of representation and abstraction. Speaking to the deep-rooted questions we all face with regards to the existence of the universe and our role, as humans, in it.

About the artist:
Erika Lizée received her MFA in Painting from CSU Northridge in 2007. In 2008, she was hired as full-time faculty at Moorpark College where she is currently an Associate Professor of Art, as well as the Director of the Moorpark College Art Gallery. Lizée is an artist that creates site-specific installations, as well as paintings and drawings. Most recently, Lizée built installations within the International Terminal at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and ArtShare LA. In September 2017, she participated in a group exhibit at Launch LA. Lizée’s work has been featured in Juxtapoz, Beautiful/Decay, Hi Fructose, The Huffington Post and Beautiful Bizarre Magazine. She currently resides in West Hills, California with her husband and two young children.

The Reality of Nature as an environmental macrocosm is not always the nurturing, restorative, spiritual, user-friendly place one imagines; nor is it the heroic antidote to civilization as fetishized by our self-critical, urbane society. Nature is not only mankind’s victim but also its source and master. It is full of wonder. It loves its children but also takes revenge.

This group of 13 artists working in painting, photography, drawing, as well as quasi-sculptural and saliently hybrid mediums, each use both experience and concept to explore the conflicts and confluences between what we want and what we have when it comes to living in a world the belongs to both Man and Nature.

For curator Kristine Schomaker, landscape and metaphor is an infinitely expandable continuum, which as this diverse group of artists demonstrates, is vast enough to encompass a range of materials, styles and techniques from evocative total abstraction to narrative and conceptual pictorialism. In that conceptual and art historical context, The Reality of Nature reflects the complexities and contradictions not only of our mythological relationship to the natural world but of our actual existence within it.

Where many seek out and embrace the enduring beauty, majesty and intimate details in the forms of its flora and fauna, its skies, ice, storms, and sunsets, others take an approach of critique and caution, using industrial materials or depicting the dire consequences of humanity’s subjugation of nature. With motifs culled from sources in architecture and wilderness, science and science fiction, resource scarcity, pollution, evolution, tenacious adaptation, and sublime phenomenology, this timely, even urgent, exhibition uses visual art’s capacity for resolving paradoxes and imaging the impossible to demonstrate frameworks for changing the adversarial dynamic to one of cooperation and humility. Ultimately, a battle against nature is not only one mankind cannot truly win, but one not at all worth waging.

Los Angeles (February 2017) – Opening February 28th, the Annenberg Community Beach House Gallery in Santa Monica will host a group show of contemporary artists who share the experience of being outsiders in Donald Trump’s America. In “Personal Narrative”, curators Diane Williams and Sheli Silverio have brought together artists from diverse backgrounds of immigrant diaspora and gender identity.

Intending to stimulate conversation, inspire creativity and increase understanding of contemporary art in the context of today’s society, the curators have collected works that raise issues and question of both cultural and social consciousness. A panel discussion on May 6th underlines this awareness with a dialogue about process and experiences as 21st century artists living and working in Los Angeles.

The work explores materials that promote a sensory experience and story lines from contemporary artists whose works are experimental, provisional, gestural and instinctive. Each artist possesses an individual approach to his or her artistic methods, working and reworking in a range of technique and materials. These themes are examined in their individual bodies of work.
